Nordiq Canada is thrilled to announce that in collaboration with XC Ski Nation, Nordiq Canada created a video library of 33 on-snow game tutorials to support the development of youth skiers!

The videos will serve as a great tool for Jackrabbit coaches and CC Learning Facilitators, across Canada!

The videos are on the XC Ski Nation Website, in French and in English, but unlike most of the other videos, these are completely open access.

Games and best practices, provided by Mary Waddell

Relays

  • Keep distance short  20 m  - so they won't get too tired
  • Minimizes problems with wide range in abilities
  • Teams should be 4-5. If too big the kids wait around too long and get cold and lose interest. Keep teams as small as possible
  • Set-up – keep them all on one end (do not split into 2 groups and race back and forth)
  • Go to a turnaround and  come back to their team.  Use an area with definite boundaries – ie snowfence as one of the end boundaries and cones to mark the other end.
  •  Leader or helper demonstrate the relay instead of talking about it ..bla bla bla bla
  •  try to have a leader on each team – to keep them organized and enthusiastic ( could even be a teacher or parent without skis  )
  •  Equipment – use toys in your relays  etc.  it is more are fun ( makes for more work but kids like the variety) – example – pile of stuffies at one end of track.  Teams take turns retrieving stuffies until all stuffies are at the starting point.  (Stuffies can be bought at Dollar Store – buy the small stuffies and have at least 20 or 30 available.)
  • Scooter relay – one ski on, scooter 15m, turn around, change ski to other foot, scooter back to start.
  •
Games
  •  no poles
  • active start  age group –  are not as good at team games as they do not understand the game very well eg baseball
  • games for K – Gr 2 - includes tag games, chase games with continuous action.  Avoid tag games that require kids to stay still for more than a few seconds.
  • Tag games – rubber chicken tag, bean bag tag, toilet tag, frozen tag.
  • Chase games – circle tag (with criss cross and one way rules), duck duck  chicken, Red Rover, British Bulldog
  • Red light, Green light on flat and on hill for different skills
  • What Time is it Mr Wolf?  – always popular
  • Figure 8 traffic jam – make a figure 8 in snow and make it fun!
  • Team handball for Gr 2 or 3 – small area, big goal, must throw ball after 3 steps,
  •  Soccer for Gr 3/4/5
  •  Hockey/Lacrosse for Gr 5/6 and older
  • Parachute - cooperative games - link to a good on line manual
Lesson Planning
  •  Having a plan for each lesson will help to keep kids moving and give you more confidence as a leader.
  • A general plan or goal for the season will provide some structure and make lesson plans a bit easier as they should help you attain the season goal.
  • Subway Ski S'Cool lesson plans used by WCCSC shown below.
 Useful Links
  •  There are a lot of videos available on line for self-teaching but many of them are poor quality or hard to understand.  Try using google to find Norwegian videos.  They are not usually in English, but the quality is very good.
