Weekly Update December 24 - 30

Office Closure: Happy Holidays!

The Nordiq Canada office will be closed from December 25 to January 3. We wish you the happiest of holidays and hope you, too, will enjoy well-deserved rest and joy.

2021 National Programs

Nordiq Canada will launch a series of support programs to help maintain national connectivity within the ski community that will hopefully contribute to: keeping skiers motivated, help us improve and enhance our performance as skiers and coaches, and provide some fun challenges to keep the spirit of competition alive.

National Workout Videos

Beginning the week of January 17th, NST coaches will be presenting a weekly workout including drills and cues for athletes and coaches.
These workouts will be a great build to the National ski challenge running in March.
We will be collecting videos and photos and drawing participation prizes from the submissions each week.

National Distance Challenge

Beginning the week of January 11th, we will provide a tracking system for skiers to report their cumulative distance on skis.
We will draw prizes for participants as well as have a grand prize for most kms skied by the end of February.

National Ski Challenge

One challenge per week during the first three weeks of March.
Nationals may have been cancelled, but that does not mean that we cannot create a distance event that threads the national ski community together.

Stay tuned for details beginning in early January regarding how to participate.
Nordiq Canada hopes to join up with all ages and levels of skiers through this program within the challenging and diverse circumstances we are all facing this winter.

Weekly Update December 17-23

Competition Trip Criteria 2020-2021

Nordiq Canada is pleased to announce that the 2020-21 Competition Trip Selection criteria is now posted. Please review this document for more information.

Nordiq Canada’s objective for the 2020-21 competition season is to maximize Canada’s nation ranking through world cup points, while managing risk associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to achieve the necessary points for Canada to maintain or improve its nation rankings so as to secure quota spots for the 2022 Olympic Games. In the absence of competitions in Canada in the 2020-21 season from which to evaluate athlete performance, Nordiq Canada and the High Performance Committee - after lengthy discussions - have decided on the approach outlined in the Competition Trip Selection criteria for selecting athletes to compete for Canada on the World Cup, World U23 and World Junior Ski Championships and the World Ski Championships.

Team selections for upcoming international competitions will be announced and posted in the ‘News’ section of the Nordiq Canada website on Friday, December 18.

The following policies are relevant to the competition trip team selection process:

• NST Selection, Nomination and Announcement
• Dispute Resolution and Appeal Policy

We would like to thank the ski community for their patience and understanding as we navigate through the ever changing and emerging challenges of the current competition environment.

Weekly Update December 10-16

3rd Party General Liability Insurance Coverage for Virtual Events

Due to the pandemic, many clubs are replacing in-person competitions with virtual events. When considering hosting virtual events, clubs and organizers must follow these safety considerations:

1. Courses/trails must be recognized and approved trails that are open when used

2. Courses/trails are expected to have the normal safety and monitoring protocols expected in an in-person competition, such as inspection and track setting

3. Organizers should consider a check in and check out system

4. For more remote trail systems, the ‘buddy’ system should be encouraged

Clubs and organizers have duty of care over virtual events, just as they would in an in-person event.

Division can review virtual events proposals and ask the national office and the insurer for help when necessary.

Questions: Marian Doesburg, info@nordiqcanada.ca

Race License Calculation Periods

A reminder that, due to the pandemic, the FIS point and CPL calculation periods are extended back to May 13, 2019 for active license holders only. To keep your points from last season until the end of the current season, and to be included in points lists, you must have an active race license. Renew your race licenses here: https://nordiqcanada.ca/races/racing-license/.

If you already purchased your FIS race license and don’t need it because all 2020-2021 winter FIS races in Canada were cancelled, you may request a refund by emailing info@nordiqcanada.ca. Refund requests will only be accepted before December 18. Caution: There may be other reasons you need an active FIS license in 2020-2021, such as trip or team selection or summer rollerski competitions. Do not cancel your FIS license unless you are absolutely sure you will not need it. Nordiq Canada race licenses will not be refunded. Instead, race license revenue will be reinvested in programming to replace national racing, and we will continue to generate Canada Points lists given some provinces and territories are still hosting events.

Safety in Sport and Gender Equity Strategy Update

As you know, Nordiq Canada is creating a strategy to improve safety and gender equity. The strategy will be implemented at all levels – clubs, Divisions and National Office.

This fall 30 people representing the Nordiq Canada community met to review information collected through surveys of athletes, coaches, officials and organizations; discuss our vision for the future; identify best practices; and find consensus on reasonable and realistic approaches to SafeSport and Gender Equity.

These are some of the priorities identified at the workshops:

  • Policies: Documentation for what behaviour is acceptable and unacceptable from coaches and people in power
  • Training and Requirements: Athlete-coach training on empowerment, autonomy, healthy relationships
  • Engagement and Communication: Normalizing the conversation: creating a shared narrative over time
  • Enhanced Resources: Educational toolkits

In January, our working group will finalize the strategy that emerged from the workshops, and plan implementation.

Decision-making for FIS Regional Cups

Our decision-making framework will be posted to the Nordiq Canada website within a week, so that you can see who is making decisions and how. In a nutshell, organizing committees will use public health guidance to decide whether an event can continue as interprovincial,  needs to be adjusted to local, or needs to be cancelled. Nordiq Canada intends to remove the FIS Sanction if/when an organizing committee changes an event from inter-provincial to local.

Questions: Jeff Ellis, jellis@nordiqcanada.ca

FIS Points Extension

Traditionally, FIS points earned by a competitor are valid for 365 days. An athlete’s FIS point ranking is based on the average of their best five results during that 365-day period. If an athlete doesn’t compete in a FIS competition for more than one year, the athlete will lose those FIS points. Due to concerns about event cancelation resulting from the pandemic, FIS has extended the FIS point calculation period back to May 13, 2019. This means any FIS points earned from May 13, 2019 until the end of the 2021 winter season will count toward an athlete’s FIS point ranking. An athlete entering the 2020-2021 season with FIS points will not lose their points if they are unable to participate in any FIS sanctioned competitions.

It is with deep regret and disappointment, that due to the recent increase in Covid cases across Canada, the decision has been made to cancel the Frozen Thunder Camp. This was not an easy decision, as we recognize the importance of this camp. However, we have to proceed in a manner that is in best interests of athletes  and staff to ensure everyone remains in optimal health for whenever the season starts.

While the camp is cancelled, the Frozen Thunder track is not, and will be open from October 19-November 14, 2020.

2020-2021 Female Athlete Mentorship Program

The Athlete Directors are full voting members of the Nordiq Canada Board of Directors. They represent the perspectives of Nordiq Canada's athletes in decision-making. They are crucial to ensuring the athlete voice is heard, and to ensuring Nordiq Canada's success. Nordiq Canada recently added a second Athlete Director position to the Board, with the requirement of gender representation between the two positions. As a male occupies the current Athlete Director position, an election will take place to select a female Athlete Director.

Insurance Information Posted

Information on our third party sports liability insurance policy, including Directors and Officers Errors and Omissions, is provided at https://nordiqcanada.ca/about/insurance/. Note the three exclusions to the policy:

  1. Sexual Abuse and Harassment will be covered on a claims-made basis and only for claims made after July 15, 2020. Any retroactive claims will be assessed under the policy in place at the time of the alleged abuse. It is essential that you have strong and documented prevention policies and practices in place.
  2. Cyber Exclusion – losses due to hacking and other computer and data system exposures are excluded. It is essential that you have strict protocols over your entire system, particularly given the amount of private and confidential information some clubs and Divisions possess.
  3. Communicable Disease Exclusion – COVID-19 and other communicable diseases are excluded. It is essential that you have strong protocols in place, are able to prove that you followed your protocols, and can show that you communicated your protocols to members.

Framework for Developing COVID-19 Return to Play Protocols: New Sections Added

We have added two sections to the Framework (link to https://nordiqcanada.ca/nordiq-canada-covid-protocol/):
  • Skills Development Programs
  • Events/Racing
You may use this framework to develop a return to play protocol that meets your organization’s needs and satisfies the public health directives that apply where you operate. Because some Divisions have created a framework specific to their province or territory, clubs should check with their Division before drafting a return to play protocol.

Nordiq Canada Club Support Grant

Alongside the AltaGas Ski at School Grant program announced last week we are also adding the Nordiq Canada Club Support Grant program for the upcoming season. This new initiative hopes to inject up to 100 00$ in support of:
  • increasing active membership and club growth,
  • retention within SDPs and conversion to athlete development pathways,
  • professionalization and sustainability of coaching,
  • as well as club sustainability.
Application to these programs can be submitted to Nordiq Canada by division or club, leaving open a broad range of options and creativity and potential impact. These options should cater to the varying realities that exist from one division to the next. Ultimately we hope to foster enthusiasm, growth and quality throughout the ski community.
Please note that closing dates for applications to both programs is November 1st 2020.

Please call for clarifications and questions, and call us to explore options and possibilities. Above all we are seeking to have an impact.

Nordiq Canada Strengthens Commitment to Athletes and Gender Equity: Call for Nominations for New Board Position Coming Soon

At the 2020 AGM held earlier this month, Nordiq Canada’s voting members – comprised of Division Chairpersons and the elected athlete representative –  unanimously voted in favour of amending the by-laws to add a second athlete director to the Board of Directors.

Of the two athlete director positions, one is reserved for a male athlete, and the other for a female athlete. The change was made with the goal of ensuring gender equity for Canada’s cross-country ski athletes, strengthening the athlete voice on the Board of Directors, and ensuring sufficient resources available at the Board level to support the growing athlete pool across the country.

Want to help shape Nordiq Canada's future? Stay tuned for our official Call for Nominations to be released late September.

The Fluoro-free wax lists for grip and glide wax will no longer be offered as a resource or updated.  It is recommended that athletes, coaches, teams, parents etc work directly off of the various wax brand websites to confirm which waxes are fluoro free and which contain fluoro.  Many wax brands now have fluoro-free sections on their website.  Air on the side of caution if unsure if the wax contains fluorinated wax.  As a reminder fluorinated waxes are now a prohibited substance at all FIS and Nordiq Canada sanctioned events for the 2020-21 season.

One of the best ways to increase an athlete’s relatedness is to value and strengthen a positive team culture. Through this grant(s) we are looking to provide teams with the resources they need to improve team culture and create a space where female athletes want to be and want to ski. This grant will help fund a team building project that your team comes up with.

Domestic Development Committee: Feedback on Terms of Reference

As you know, in 2020-2021 Nordiq Canada is prioritizing working with Divisions and other partners to make improvements to the Olympic stream high performance system. These improvements drive toward our shared long-term goals of working together to (1) achieve sustainable international podium success and (2) provide high performance pathways that help athletes and others reach their full potential, whether domestically or internationally.

As part of these improvements, the High Performance Committee will be retired and replaced with a High Performance Selection Committee and a Domestic Development Committee (DDC). The Para-Nordic Committee will continue to support Para-Nordic domestic development.

Division Chairs and the Athlete Director have been asked to provide feedback on the Domestic Development Committee terms of reference by August 27. If you would like to provide your feedback, please contact your Division Chair or Athlete Director Angus Foster.

Nordiq Canada Coach and Athlete Development Outreach Trip

East Kootenay Camp, Kimberley, BC July 11-12, 2020

Nordiq Canada’s Coach and Athlete Development Coordinator, Ilona Gyapay, attended Cross Country British Columbia’s East Kootenay training camp this past weekend, as part of Nordiq Canada outreach. Throughout June and July, CCBC hosted Provincial day camps in five locations, for BC Ski Team, BC Development Team, and BC Talent Squad athletes.

Camps were led by Chris Manhard (CCBC Provincial Head Coach) with assistance from Provincial and Club Coaches throughout BC.

The East Kootenay Camp took place in beautiful Kimberley, BC. Training objectives were focused on ski technique and volume. Over the course of 1.5 days, athletes participated in a ski bounding intensity session and two distance roller ski sessions. The schedule provided ample opportunity for quality training, paired with minor travel for participating athletes and families. Athletes went home between sessions and planned their own accommodations and transportation. This format drastically reduced camp logistics, which enabled the focus to be concentrated on achieving training objectives.

Training closer to home provides an opportunity for athletes and coaches to re-discover locally based training opportunities. Ilona was able to participate and assist in training sessions, and connect with coaches, athletes, and parents. An immediate follow up to the outreach trip will be that Nordiq Canada assists Kimberley Nordic in connecting them with a High Performance athlete to attend their September Club training camp. This highlights the desire for clubs to have access to some of Canada’s top High Performance athletes. In future, Nordiq Canada plans on enlisting High Performance Athletes to participate in Coach and Athlete Development outreach opportunities.

We look forward to receiving your outreach requests, as we continue to assess and support coaching, athlete, and club development needs and challenges across Canada.

National Training Camp Scheduled for August in Quebec Cancelled

COVID-19 continues to bring significant changes to our daily training and preparation for the 2020-21 season. While we are slowly beginning to return to sport at different paces across the country, making decisions with our community’s safety top-of-mind is always our top priority. As a result, we have decided to cancel our planned National Training Camp in Quebec, scheduled for August 3-13, in a continued effort to respect direction from our federal and provincial government and health officials.

That said, our high-performance staff is working with coaches, sport science and medical teams across Canada to find creative and innovate ways for us to stay connected as a training community during this scheduled camp timeframe. We are in the midst of producing online information sessions that we hope to roll out in the near future. These sessions may include sport and professional development sessions. More details will be communicated once they are finalized.

Coaches can now start signing up for their 2020-21 Nordiq Canada Coaching License

Please share with your fellow club coaches. The more coaches sign up for the NC license, the more Coaching Development funding Nordiq Canada gets from federal partners! Your club may also qualify for NC grants if enough coaches have signed up.

All coaches coaching for more than 7 hours/year must sign up for the 2020-21 NC Coaching License before starting to coach from July 1st 2020 to June 30th 2021 in order to continue benefiting from NC liability insurance coverage and other benefits. English form

The NC coaching license is mandatory for all active cross country ski coaches in Canada who are coaching at least 7 hours per year with a registered cross country ski club (with their division).

An “active” coach is anyone who performs typical coaching tasks with a registered club, including delivering practices or assisting with delivery of practices, with any age group, for at least 7 hours per year.

Personal information collected is kept private and may only be used for risk management, planning and communication purposes between Nordiq Canada, the coach’s club and division.

The license is renewable on a yearly basis, starting June 15th and effective July 1st of each year.

Go to the NC Coaching License page for more details and registration.

High Performance Selection Committee Draft Terms of Reference

Division Chairs and the Athlete Director have been asked to provide feedback on the DRAFT Terms of Reference for the High Performance Selection Committee (HPSC). The HPSC is designed to be a small skills-based committee with a narrow scope, complimented by a larger High Performance Development Committee. The draft TOR includes, for example, a nominations process, limit on number of terms and voting procedures. Please speak with your Division Chair or Athlete Director if you’d like to review the draft and provide feedback. We expect to approve the TOR by late June.

Return to Play Protocol

This Framework for Developing COVID-19 Return to Play Protocols will help Divisions and clubs modify operations to align with public health measures in place across Canada. You may use this framework to develop a return toplay protocol that meets your organization’s needs and satisfies the directives that apply where you operate. Because some Divisions have created a framework specific to their province or territory, clubs should check with their division before drafting a return to play protocol.
The Sport Medicine Advisory Committee continues to provide regular updates, which include some guidance on return to play. Additionally, the Nordiq Canada COVID page on our website will continue to be updated regularly with important information for clubs and divisions.

What will next ski season look like?
That’s a question skiers, administrators, coaches, event planners and others are asking. Nordiq Canada is there with you.

That’s why Nordiq Canada is scenario planning. That means we are thinking about the different ways our world could look, and developing plans for how we would proceed under each scenario. For example, what would a Jack Rabbit program look like if physical distancing is in place in January 2021? How will we run events if gatherings of more than 50 people are not allowed? We share your concerns about what the new normal might look like, and we are working hard to help you prepare. Over the coming months we will develop the tools you will need under various scenarios, and we will roll these out to you as you need them.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol
We hope you are staying well! The situation respecting the current pandemic continues to change quickly as it affects the activities of Nordiq Canada National, Divisions, clubs and members. It is expected that updated restrictions and recommendations published by your local public health authority, the Government of Canada and other authorities are followed.

There are a number of activities and events that were pre-approved and/or issued Certificates of Insurance before this emergency arose. Local and national public heath guidance may impact whether those pre-approvals and certificates remain valid.

Many clubs are considering how to tailor training to at-home or other environments. Our insurers remind you to:
  1. Use Common sense
  2. Tailor coaching/expert guidance to age and ability
  3. Keep a record or training log – both athlete and coach/trainer
  4. Do not do or recommend what you would not do under normal circumstances
  5. Stay within the coach/trainer skill level as well as the ability level of the group you are advising
  6. Obey and follow all local, provincial and federal rules, regulations and guidelines
  7. Exercise extreme caution with use of weights or other equipment or apparatus – there is no shortcut.
  8.  Ensure you are following the principles of safety in sport as you adapt training; For example, think about how you would apply the principles of the Rule of Two in a video-conferenced training environment

Fluoro Wax Ban Update
Nordiq Canada along side our snowsports partners across North America are working towards a joint announcement regarding a full fluoro wax ban for the 2020-21 season.  As of the week of April 6th the International Ski Federation was still moving forward with their proposed FIS wide ban on the use of fluorinated waxes.  The working group focused on the implementation of the ban continues to meet weekly on the topic.
On our end of things it is the position of Nordiq Canada that the Tier 2 ban of medium and high fluoro waxes from the 2019-20 season was successful and with the impending FIS ban for next season that Tier 2 events sanctioned by Nordiq Canada will move to a full fluoro ban as well.  As Tier 1 events are all FIS sanctioned competitions and fall under the FIS ban we would have across the board a full fluoro ban for Nordiq Canada sanctioned events for next season.  We are working on providing information for the proper disposal of fluorinated wax products, addressing concerns in regards to contaminated waxing equipment and an updated Allowable Wax list.  More details will be shared as they become available.  Tentatively mid May has been proposed for an official announcement among all snowsports in North America.

Coaching Development
While we may not be advised or able to organize and /or host coach training workshops, there exist many opportunities for those of us with some extra time on our hands to invest in continued personal/professional development. Listed are some updates related to coaching development as well as some interesting options for online learning. And while perhaps not the most integral means of learning, I am convinced there is a great deal of benefit to any exposure we provide ourselves on a regular basis. These are also topics that we can pick up when back in the field and have the privilege of being in one another’s company once again.

Making Ethical Decisions –
As of Wednesday April 1st, an updated version of the course is now being delivered based upon a revised Code of Ethics developed by the Coaching Association of Canada.
What does this mean to us?
  • For all new learners the process is pretty much status quo. Following the ICC online module, learners can proceed directly to the MED online evaluation available in the Locker and complete the process.
  • For learners who were in the process of completing the MED online evaluation, I am afraid that you will need to start the evaluation over (no extra costs) as the evaluation reflects the new Code of Ethics. We also recommend reviewing the new Code of Ethics that is available through the link below.
  • For learners who have previously completed the ICC online module and have not begun the MED online evaluation, we recommend reviewing the new Code of Ethics prior to beginning the evaluation process through the Locker.

If you are a coach who has not completed certification at the Community Coaching context, we do recommend proceeding with the process which includes

You can find the updated Code of Ethics on the CAC’s site or opening the attachment.

Safe Sport –
While visiting the Locker you might notice some new online learning courses, notably the Safe Sport module that was added Wednesday April 1st. Safe Sport is currently an important topic in the Canadian sporting culture and the module seeks to enable coaches to identify and address issues under the premise that:
Everyone has the right to feel safe and participate in an accessible and inclusive sport environment free from maltreatment, regardless of age, ancestry, colour, race, citizenship, ethnic origin, place of origin, language, creed, religion, athletic potential, disability, family status, marital status, gender identity, gender expression, sex and sexual orientation.
The module is free and serves as a complement to the Making Ethical Decisions component that certified coaches are required to complete. While not (yet) mandatory, the Safe Sport online module provides not only a heightened awareness to coaches as others, but also defines action pathways and tools to enable individuals to address inappropriate behaviour and situations.
Note that this online learning module is available to everyone involved in sport (athletes, coaches, parents, administrators, etc.)

Multi-sport training – Including Comp-Dev modules
Not that during the current Coronacrisis, Provincial and Territorial Sport Coaching Resources are offering webinar delivery of the different modules. You can check with your organization to see what is available. There may also be opportunities to benefit from courses offered outside your own division by visiting the various websites as well as the calendar in the Locker.

As the impossibility of in-person training continues, visit the Locker and provincial territorial sites to see what is being added to the web delivered menu.

NCCP Nutrition –
If you have not already visited this learning resource also available in the Locker, it may be of interest to not only coaches, but athletes and parents as well.

Sport for life –
Coaches can find a number of interesting online courses housed within the S4L website. The can be accessed via the elearning housed under the Campus tab on the Sport for Life homepage.

Please join us in celebrating Dave Dyer, Nordiq Canada Events Director, as he strides into retirement. Dave has been with Nordiq Canada…forever, and the ski community is so much better for it. Dave has done it all with unmatched selflessness and humanity. Thank you, Dave!
It’s impossible to replace Dave with just one person. We are doing what we do best and taking a team approach to providing event services. Megan Begley will coordinate the team that, at this time, includes Jeff Ellis as events coordinator and Marian Doesburg as events support. Para Nordic Team Update

The Para-Nordic team was all set to begin the WPNS Biathlon World Championships, when they woke up to different news.  The event had been cancelled and they were catching planes home in 6 hours.

Robin McKeever recently commented to the Para-Nordic team: "I want to take the time to formally thank  Custom Travel and the team at Air Canada for the assistance to get the team home ASAP. I want to also thank all the staff & athletes who were involved in communication, getting wax rooms packed up and gear packed and transported to airports. From 3am wake ups in Sweden, to staying awake until after 1am in Canada, It was very much a crazy team effort."

The entire team of athletes and staff are currently home safely and self-isolating for 14-days.  They continue to train, albeit solo, sometimes on the ski trails (the skiing in Canmore is amazing right now) or doing home based workouts.  Some are also digging into personal interests like educational courses or art, and others are giving their homes a deep clean.

As a staff, we continue preparations towards 2022, and the many shapes this may take in the coming months.  We continue to be a strongly connected and supportive team and know we'll get through this together.  Wishing you all good health from our team to yours!

Young Canucks Take Giant Stride Forward at World Championships
A trio of teenage Canadians sprinted into the heats on the opening day of the Under 23 and Junior World Ski Championships and set the tone for a successful week. Heading into the final weekend, Canadian athletes have combined to post eight top-20 finishes, highlighted by Remi Drolet’s stellar fourth-place battle in the junior men’s 30-kilometre skate-ski race.
Drolet came just 10 seconds away from becoming the third Canadian ever to win a Junior World Championship medal.
Other Junior highlights include: Tom Stephen skiing to 17th in the 30km. Xavier McKeever matched that result in the 10-kilometre classic-ski race.
The Under-23 men also had a strong outing in Oberwiesenthal, Germany. Philippe Boucher had the performance of the week after fighting for 12th spot in the 30-kilometre skate-ski race. Sam Hendry finished six spots behind him in 18th.
Graham Ritchie also celebrated a career-best distance result at the Under-23 Nordic World Ski Championships after storming to 13th-place in the 15-kilometre classic-ski race. It was sweet redemption for Graham who crashed in the opening round of the sprint heats after qualifying in sixth place.
Laura Leclair had the result of the week for the Under 23 women. Laura skied to 20th place in the sprint race to open the week.

Para-Nordic Update: Dresden & Altenberg

The Para-Nordic team has returned home after a triumphant trip to the World Cup in Dresden and Altenberg, Germany.
With some rough conditions, local volunteers and organizers did a great job to preserve snow needed for the track. Despite less than ideal conditions, the Para-Nordic program was able to come away with some great results.
Highlights of this world cup includes:
  • Both a gold and silver medal for Brian McKeever
  • Photo finish silver medal for Collin Cameron and 2 bronze
  • A season’s best race for silver for Mark Arenz
  • Natalie Wilkie sprinting to bronze
Overall, impressive results and good racing by all athletes. The para-nordic team’s next event will be in Ostersünd, Sweden in March.

Club Affiliations

Please remember that an athlete may only represent one Nordiq Canada club team during the ski season as per Art 103.4 of the CCR.  This club is designated by the athlete when they purchase a Racing License. The club listed on membership must be the same as the club indicated on the race license and on their FIS license.
A reminder that skiers may join multiple clubs for training purposes and that the training group can be identified under the Team function on the license application if the training group has been registered with Nordiq Canada as per Art. 6.3 of the NorAm Technical Package.

We have had a number of situations in the past where skier affiliation is with different clubs on their domestic and FIS licenses which causes confusion in the system.

Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) Athlete Workshop

Nordiq Canada is hosting the SDRCC Workshop Athletes Rights and Responsibilities: Taking Charge of Your Career on Thursday, November 14 at 2:00 PM at the Bill Warren Training Centre. The target audience for the workshop is athletes, however it is also valuable for coaches and parents. The workshop is free and open to everyone.

Workshop Description

Whether it is over team selection, carding, doping, disciplinary matters, or an athlete agreement, a dispute between an athlete and the sport organization has the potential to seriously impede an athlete's sport career ambitions. Knowing their rights and responsibilities in the sport system will reduce the risk of such disputes, so that athletes can put all of their energy into what will help them reach their full potential on the field. This session will cover four fundamental rights of athletes, with corresponding responsibilities. Participants will learn, through interactive scenario analyses, valuable tips and strategies that all athletes should know about in order to steer clear of career-altering disputes with their sport governing bodies.

National Technicians Make Annual Supplier Trip

Do you know how important equipment and supplier relationships are to international success? Para-Nordic National Ski Team Head Technician Ian Daffern sure does. It’s why he and technician Bruce Johnson travelled to Europe this month to meet with suppliers and hand-pick equipment direct at the Fischer factory in Ried, Austria.
The process started in Canada, where Ian met with each athlete to assess gaps in their fleet. Every pair of skis in Fischer’s racing service area is unique. It’s Ian’s job to test and squeeze each pair as he hand-picks the perfect skis for each athlete. Ian also spent time meeting with boot, pole and wax suppliers.
Ian isn’t just looking for this year’s equipment. He is already discussing his needs and looking at skis for Beijing 2022. For Ian, the annual supplier trip is his most important trip of the year.
