Hello Communities!

A quick update to let you know what's happening around the territory! If you would like additional information on any of these topics please ask. If I have missed anything, or if you have an update to add, please let me know.

• A NCCP coaching course (Community Coaching Workshop) will be held on November 17th in Whitehorse. 
• A community visit to Dawson City will be happening in early December. The primary focus of the weekend will be training new volunteers who will be coaching kids and teaching skills and games on skis. You don't have to be from Dawson to attend - please let me know if you would like more information.
• Mt. Lorne, Marsh Lake and Whitehorse clubs have Bunnyrabbit/Jackrabbit Programs ready to go this year with registrations open or opening soon.
• Kwanlin Koyotes Youth Ski Club skill development program will run weekly after school on Wednesdays starting Nov 28th.
• CCY events list for the season is up on the main CCY website - we encourage everyone to attend events.

Introducing your CCY Community Programmer for the 2018/2019 Season

Hi! My name is Kristenn and I am excited to be CCYs Community Programmer for the 2018/2019 season.

This position is new to me, but I am not new to cross country skiing. I am a skier myself, a former competitive athlete and I plan to be active for life, daily! I will be working part-time for Cross Country Yukon in Whitehorse doing administrative work, including the Community Programmer role.

I hope to have a chance to help you and your Yukon community maintain or build a cross country ski program. My goal is to help connect you to resources available through CCY (Cross Country Yukon) and CCC (Cross Country Canada).

Highlights of the Year

We have 5 strong affiliates this year.  Cross country skiing is doing very well in Marsh Lake, Mt Lorne, Haines Junction and Dawson City.  In addition we have the Kwanlin Koyotes which offers it's After School Program to the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, but is open to any skiers in Whitehorse who would like to take part.

Community visits and updates:

Old Crow skiers hosted another successful 'Father Mouchet' Loppet.  The loppet honours the man who started a cross country skiing tradition in Old Crow in the 1960's.  Twenty-five skiers took part in the event that was spearheaded by Olympian, Knute Johnsgaard and former TEST skiers, Pavlina Sudrich. Congratulations to the volunteers and skiers who took part!

Dawson City on Dec 9/10 when we had mild temperatures and great snow!  There was a good turnout of coaches, Jackrabbit leaders and interested skiers.  We had fun skiing on the dike and the Moose Mountain trails.  Thanks to all those who participated.

Haines Junction on February 14.  We had 'love-ly' conditions in the school yard and on the Forestry trail system, thanks to the local volunteers and good snow base.  Grades 1 to 5 played on skis in the school field during the day and the After School ski club skied for an hour on the trails.

Marsh Lake on February 4.  It was a mild day on Bob Lake and we had a fun session with the Jackrabbit leaders and then joined in with the Marsh Lake Jackrabbits for their lesson.  The next weekend was a cold one and unfortunately, the annual Loppet was cancelled.

Kwanlin Koyotes on Wednesdays December to March - 25 skiers registered and most of them were regular skiers.  About 10 Koyotes attended nearly every session.  Congratulations to those keen skiers! The group explored the Koyotes trails and WCCSC trails over the last two months.

The Kwanlin Koyotes had a Spring Break program.  Three extra sessions were attended by 6 skiers. The Koyotes season officially ended with a visit by Olympian, Emily Nishikawa on April 4.   Emily skied with 9 Koyotes and 6 coaches on a beautiful, Superblue day.

Thanks to Lotteries Yukon for providing prizes and gifts for the Kwanlin Koyotes, and for their ongoing support of cross country programs and events in the Yukon.

There are active ski groups in Pelly Crossing and Golden Horn but no updates about their programs at this point.
