Update from St. Elias Ski Club

An update from St. Elias Ski Club in Haines Junction: 

Thankfully, our awesome groomers are making some beautiful lemonade out of the lemony snowpack, and have set even more track out on Pine Lake today, including an adventurous little kids loop. See the trail report below for the description.

Memberships

2019 Memberships are due now. A membership is a steal of a deal at a suggested donation of $20 for individual and 30$ for a family. Membership fees cover our annual operating costs, in other words- keeping your membership current keeps our trails groomed.

The 6th annual VIMFF fundraiser will be held again this spring, and the organizing committee is looking for assistance. If you have some time to contribute to this event, please email Sarah at sechisholm@gmail.com.

Trail Report

Pine lake

Skate and classic track starting from the campground and heading west past the creek and along the entire North shore (the sunny side) of the lake. There are two options to loop back to the campground, one cross trail cuts straight across the lake to the campground, and the another cuts across at Monty Alford's cabin and back to the campground on the south side of the lake.

Kids loop!- A short kids adventure loop goes into the marsh just west of the campground beach and back to the main trail.

Forestry Trails

Located near the old Parks Farm and the Wildland Fire Base, 5km on the right North on the Alaska highway from turnoff in HJ. There is a map at a kiosk located off the highway on the right hand side.

Parks Farm Field

Located near the old Parks Farm and the Wild-land Fire Base. Park at the same location as the Forestry trails.  Ski to the Fire Base, there are two loops and when conditions allow there is great skate skiing here.

You can pick up entry forms in Whitehorse at Coast Mountain Sports, Icycle Sports, Cross Country Yukon at Mt. Mac and at the Marsh Lake Community Centre.

St. Elias Ski Club Update!

Dear Skiers, 

Amazing news from Haines Junction: Andy and Ryan groomed and trackset a loop around the lower part of Pine Lake today (Jan 3, 2019). It's finally time to get those skis out of the garage and get out for a first ski on your local lake. 

You can access the loop from both side of the lake: The campground day use area on the highway side and the ramp on the other side. 

The Forestry Trails and the Parks Farm Field will be trackset when there's enough snow.

New online waxing video available from Cross Country Canada!

DO YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT HOW TO WAX SKIS? 

Cross Country Canada has added another online training resource to its expanding e-learning portfolio, hosted in the Locker (Coaching Association of Canada).

The module will be free for any coaches with Intro to Community Coach training and $12 for any other person interested in improving their waxing skills and knowledge. You don't have to be a coach nor have any NCCP training to do this online waxing clinic!

Skiing is ON in Dawson City!

Skiing is ON in Dawson City! 

Skiing is on in Dawson City! CCY partnered with the ski community in Dawson City and coaching & grooming clinics were facilitated at Minto Park and on the Moose Mountain Trails during the first weekend in December 2018!

Course Facilitator Mike Gladish reported:

"It was a great weekend in Dawson, with plenty of snow and temperatures between -10 and -20. Eight keen skiers came to the morning session at Minto Park, which had been groomed by Martin Kienzler. We spent a lot of time on balance and coordination to build skills for the basic diagonal stride. There were nine participants for the afternoon session on FUNdamentals for ski lessons for kindergarten to Grade 2. We ran through how to teach basic skills like falling and rising, star turns and movement on skis.

On Sunday morning, four volunteer groomers met for an hour to review equipment inventory and improvements needed, then we groomed some of the Moose Mountain trails. Several Dawsonites came for the community ski on Sunday afternoon. The trails were in great condition and the sun peeked out for a few minutes. The chalet was warm and hot chocolate and treats were being served."

CCY would like to thank Cathie Findlay-Brook for her enthusiasm, organizational skills and passion for developing cross country skiing in her community. She really made the weekend happen and encouraged so many people to participate!

CCY would also like to thank Mike Gladish for sharing his knowledge and expertise to help grow the sport of skiing! If you have the chance to learn from Mike you should jump on it!
